Battle of the Powers

From the One Wiki to Rule Them All, the Lord of the Rings Encyclopedia.

(Redirected from War of the Powers)

The Battle of the Powers was a massive conflict in Middle-earth and Valinor after the Dark Lord Morgoth sought to claim Middle-earth for his own. He built a massive fortress known as Utumno in the North of Middle-earth, (at this time known as Arda) but not before the Valar knew of his evil crimes, such as corrupting Arda with his evil creatures and corrupting the hearts of all sentient creatures, but perhaps the crime which inspired the Valar to action was the creation of the Orcs. The Orcs spawned forth from the Earth like wolves and devoured whatever thing they came upon. Manwe and the rest of the Valar could stand this no longer, since Eru couldn't bear to see his children being tortured by the dark powers and so the Valar came to Arda in physical form and destroyed Utumno, and one of the Valar battled Morgoth in combat, and finally the smith of the Valar bound Morgoth with a great chain and imprisoned him in that which not even the Valar can escape. This was the end of the War, although in later times even the Valar would be decieved by him and Manwe would release the Dark Lord back into the world.

[edit] Events of the war

One of the most memorable events of the war is the creation of the orcs by the Dark Lord Melkor. This was achieved by spies of Morgoth going forwards to the waters of awakening and deceiving the new children with a dark horseman and lies of discord. When the White Horseman arrived, many of the Elves had been tricked into believing that he was an enemy and fled. The ones which remained were captured by the dark powers and taken to Angband and Utumno where they were tortured and corrupted until they became mindless servants who lived only for war. This was the most hateful act to Eru because it destroyed the most beautiful creatures on Arda and corrupted the surviving Elves.

[edit] The New Darkness

The Orcs were a race of sentient slaves bred during this war to serve Morgoth and Sauron only and to never hesitate in their commands. The orcs were bred like ants in the dark pits of Utumno and thus feared light. Light was their only true weakness, and to begin with they were weak creatures with a lust for killing but later on in the later conflict which involved the Ring of Power they became a much stronger race which quarreled more, became more intelligent and began to question their masters.
