Valmar otherwise known as the City of Bells, and as Valimar was the dwelling place of the Valar and their Maiar servants in Valinor on the continent of Aman.

Valmar-0

Valmar

According to The Atlas of Middle-earth, Valmar was on the Girdle of Arda west of Taniquetil.[1]

History

The city was built on the great Plain of Valinor beyond the shield of the Pelóri in VY 3500.[2] The city was gated with great golden gates. It had silver domes, and streets paved with gold. Before its western gate lay the mound of Ezellohar, on which stood the Two Trees, and Máhanaxar, the Ring of Doom, were outside Valmar. Valmar is generally considered the capital of Valinor, as it was there that the Valar congregated.[3][4][5]

Valmar

After being released from prison, Melkor lived here for a time as he could not leave the city due to the Valar's mistrust of him.

Etymology

Valmar was a Quenya word that meant 'Valar-home'.[5]
