The society was founded in September 1966. They are mainly a literary society dedicated to the study and discussion of the fantasy works of J.R.R. Tolkien. They meet once a month. They once published a journal known as ORCRIST (shared the same name with the sword of Thorin) irregularly until 1977. The group's name was changed to Tolkien and Fantasy Society in January, 2001. Membership is open to any enrolled University of Wisconsin student interested in the works of Tolkien.
