"I command. I return to Isengard by the shortest road."
Uglúk in The Two Towers: Special Extended Edition

Uglúk was the leader of the Uruk-hai Scouts and was highly trusted by Saruman.

Biography

He and his company were the ones that captured Merry and Pippin at Amon Hen and headed towards Isengard. He was one of the largest and strongest of the Uruk-hai and was a fierce fighter, managing to dismount Éomer and nearly kill him.

Uglúk was also the commander that raided the Wold shortly before the fellowship left Moria. He was highly trusted by Saruman, and stood by Saruman's orders when a band of Sauron's Orcs, led by Grishnákh, tried to take Merry and Pippin to Mordor, and beheaded one of Grishnákh's followers to prevent Saruman's orders being disobeyed.

Uglúk was ultimately killed by Éomer when his band was attacked by Rohirrim.[citation needed]

Portrayal in Adaptations

In Peter Jackson's movie adaptation of The Two Towers, Uglúk is played by Nathaniel Lees. According to The Fellowship of the Ring movie, the initial leader of the Scouts was Lurtz, who killed Boromir and was slain by Aragorn at Amon Hen. Uglúk took command of the troop after his death.

In the beginning of The Two Towers, he, and other Uruk-hai are running to Isengard to give Merry and Pippin to Saruman. He encounters Grishnákh, Snaga, and their Orc battalion, with Grishnákh ultimately telling them to hurry up with the hobbits. When Pippin asks the Uruks to give Merry some water, an Uruk gives Merry Orc draught and feeds them, under Uglúk's command. The Uruks continue on, and have a break by the border of Fangorn Forest. When Grishnákh and Snaga try to negotiate about eating Merry and Pippin, he explains to Grishnákh why they cannot eat them (they need to go to Saruman), but when Snaga tries to chop off Merry's side because it was just "A bit off the flank", Uglúk decapitates him, and then the Uruks devour Snaga. Uglúk is killed off-screen by the Riders of Rohan's onslaught.
