According to the earliest story of Eriol the mariner, Tombo was the name of the "Gong of the Children," a gong in Tol Eressëa that would summon any children near to the Hall of Play Regained either to meals, in the Cottage of Lost Play, or to tale-telling at the Room of the Log Fire. Respectively, it would be struck either once or thrice. [1]

Ilfiniol, who was named Littleheart by those who owned the Cottage, was the warden of Tombo, and the gong is said by Lindo to have been with Littleheart when he sailed in Wingilot with Eärendel, seeking the city of Kôr.

The gong was said to make a "sweet noise".
