The Tolkien Society is an organisation based in the United Kingdom which aims to "encourage and further interest in the life and works of the late Professor J.R.R. Tolkien". Founded in 1969, it is the oldest Tolkien society still active. As an educational charity based in England and Wales it offers help and services to teachers and students.
The Society is also maintains an archive, which includes a repository for documents relating to the history of the Society and various media reports and journals, all on the subject of Tolkien and his writings.
During his lifetime, Tolkien agreed to be the Society's Honorary President, a title he still holds in perpetuo. Several members of the Tolkien family have been involved with the Society, and Priscilla Tolkien remains its Honorary Vice President.
In August 2019, the Tolkien Society will hold "Tolkien 2019", a three-day convention open to the public, in Birmingham, to celebrate their fiftieth active year. Notable guests will include Tolkien scholar Tom Shippey and Tolkien-artist Alan Lee.
