Megaloceros1

This skeleton of a Megaloceros in New Zealand's Christchurch museum may have inspired Peter Jackson to give Thranduil a stately mount suitable for an Elf-king.

Megaloceros, or the Irish Elk, is an extinct genus of deer presumed to be portrayed in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (Megaloceros is not mentioned by name). Thranduil is seen riding a Megaloceros during Smaug's attack on Erebor. In The Desolation Of Smaug, Thranduil's throne appears to be comprised of Megaloceros antlers.
