The Dawnless Day refers to the period of darkness that covered Gondor and parts of Rohan blocking out the Sun starting on March 10, 3019.

The darkness came from black fumes sent out from Mordor, no doubt from Mount Doom. The darkness lasted throughout the course of the Battle of the Pelennor Fields during which some light from up above did make it through to the surface. It was finally blown away by a strong wind from the West on March 15 possibly from Aman and sent by Manwë, near the end of the Battle signifying a new hope for the Free Peoples of Middle-earth.
