"Thorin sought only the Arkenstone, unaware that Bilbo was hiding it in his pillow." - Did Bilbo hide it from Thorin purposely? Or was he just holding it as an interesting looking thing? (the article seems to leave out this detail)

Arkensmaril? Is the Arkenstone a Silmaril?
Out of curiosity, and the recent Hobbit movie, I want to ask, is there any indication that the Arkenstone is one of the Silmaril? If I remember my stories properly, one was tossed into the "earth", and could it have been found by the dwarves? Maybe the riches of the mountain were created by it? Arkenstone as one of Feanor's Lamps
In Unifinished Tales (Of Tuor and His Coming to Gondolin) p 24 as Tuor is led through the gates I find "And then Gelmir brought forth one of those lamps for which the Noldor were renowned; for they were made of old in Valinor and neither wind nor water could quench them, and when they were unhooded, they sent forth a clear blue light from a flame imprisoned in a white crystal."
There is a footnote to that passage (p 54/5), refering to an episode from and early version of Turin which calls such lamps "'Feanorian lamps' of which the Noldor themselves did not know the secret; and they are there described as 'crystals hung in a fine chain net, and the crystals shining with an inner blue radiance.'"
This seems a very likely suspect for the Arkenstone. Perhaps crafted by Feanor in the same manner as the Silmarils, though with considerably lesser power in them, and with the knowledge of their making lost with Feanor. How this gem came to Erebor is not known, but it seems a far more likely thing that by the end of the First Age some elf fled west with one of these portable and not as well known gems, until he came to the Lonely Mountain and by some means lost it there.. 24.245.5.102 02:46, January 26, 2015 (UTC)
In the Deitch version,Bilbo puts the Arkenstone on a 16-foot pole. He then uses the Black Arrow to point it at Slag's heart. Judging by Slag's death cry,that stone caught him right where it counted.
