• Gandalf enters Dol Guldur and confirms that the evil thereby found is indeed Sauron returned living under the name Necromancer.
• Gandalf also finds Thráin II, son of Thrór and father of Thorin II Oakenshield being held prisoner there and receives the Key of the Lonely Mountain and its map from him.
• Thráin II dies in prison in Dol Guldur.
