Sprites are sapient beings that existed in the world of Arda in its earliest days, as recorded in the earliest forms of Tolkien's Mythology. They are the spirits]of trees and woods, of dale and forest and mountain-side, or those that sing amid the grass at morning and chant among the standing corn at eve.

Sprites were born before the world and came with the Ainur. They do not seem to be of the Ainur, nor one of the Children of Ilúvatar, and were probably immortal. They were attached to the growing things in nature and were naturally playful beings, and were known for chanting and singing in the many places where things grew. They existed in great numbers and were called by many names.[1]
