Shadowfax
From the One Wiki to Rule Them All, the Lord of the Rings Encyclopedia.
Shadowfax ("Sceadufæx" in Rohirric) is the lord of all horses. He is a descendent of Felarof, of the race of the Mearas, the greatest horses of Middle-earth. Shadowfax was capable of comprehending human speech and was said to run faster than the wind. Originally belonging to the House of Eorl, Lord of Rohan, Shadowfax was too wild to be tamed by the Rohirrim; eventually being granted to Gandalf the White by Theoden, the then-king of Rohan.
During the events before the Battle of Helm's Deep, and after Gandalf's appearance to Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas. He then went on to carry Gandalf into battle in many occasions during "The War of the Ring":
- The battle for Helm's Deep
- The battle for Minas Tirith (Lord of the Rings:Return of the King)
- The final battle against Sauron's forces, outside the Black Gates of Mordor
- Gandalf rode Shadowfax when he, Gimli, Aragorn and Legolas travelled to Rohan, leaving behind the Hobbits, Merry and Pippin, to the tending of the ents, while Frodo and Sam continued the first steps of their journey towards the Black Gate, where they later found impassable, and had to find another way, Legolas rode with Gimli, on a white horse supplied by the "Men of the West," who also gave a mighty steed for Aragorn to use.
He was also instrumental in transporting Gandalf and Peregrin Took from Rohan to Minas Tirith, when Sauron believed that Pippin had the Ring.
It is believed that Shadowfax accompanied Gandalf across the Sea and into the west.
