History
Edit
Here, in the Cracks of Doom, Sauron forged the One Ring in the mid-Second Age and this was the only location in which the One Ring could be destroyed. Therefore, it was the destination for Frodo Baggins and the Quest of the Ring.
The final fated drama that put an end to the One Ring and Gollum was played out in this chamber of doom, after which it was destroyed, along with the mountain.
Etymology
Edit
Sammath Naur is Sindarin for 'Chambers of Fire'.
