Old Words and Names in the Shire was a book written by Meriadoc Brandybuck after the War of the Ring. It is possible that Merry's interest in this topic developed during his travels to other lands, particularly Rohan, as the language of that land was distantly related to the former tongue of northern Hobbits. Merry and Pippin recognized words in Rohan's language.
