Nessa (Quenya; IPA: [ˈnessa] - "Young") is an Ainu, and the least of the Queens of the Valar and of all the Valar of Valinor; all the others are Maiar.[1]

BiographyEdit

Nessa was the sister of Oromë. She is lithe and swift of foot; she loves fast moving creatures such as deer. Her speed is said to have even that of a deer which follow her in the wilds. Nessa married the valiant warrior Tulkas in Almaren, during the Spring of Arda (Years of the Lamps).[1]

Before the destruction of Almaren, she would often dance her dances on its great green grasses and later in Valimar on never-fading green lawns.[1]

In YL 3400, Nessa married the valiant warrior Tulkas.[2]

EtymologyEdit

Nessa comes from the Quenya neth ("young").[3]

Other namesEdit

Two earlier names for Nessa were Helinyetille, the "Eyes of Heartsease", from helin ("violet, pansy"), and Melesta, from mele ("to love").[4]

Other versions in the legendariumEdit

In the earlier texts, Nessa and Estë were considered "highest among the Maiar". Lea the Young was the wife of Tulkas, and was later changed to Nessa.[2]

She was once envisioned as the daughter of Vána.[5]
