Nandorin is the language originally spoken by the Nandor.
History[]
Nandorin was the language of the Nandor, the Elves of Teleri lineage who remained East of the Misty Mountains during the Great Journey to Aman before the First Age, and it descended directly from "Ancient Telerin" or "Common Telerin". After the some of the Nandor crossed the Blue Mountains and entered in Beleriand, the language split in two different dialects: Ossiarindren, or "West-Danian", and Leikvian, or "East-Danion".[1]
After the First Age, the Nandor mingled with some of the Avari and the Sindar, expecially in Mirkwood and Lothlórien, and their language was gradually displaced by Sindarin, though the Silvan Elves spoke this language with a distinct accent.
Conceptual history[]
Before the publication publication of The Lord of the Rings the language of the Green-elves, the precursor of the Nandorin was called Danian in The Etymologies.[2] However, only a small number of words of this language are attested, thus is difficult to deduce how many differences could exist between the two language. During the developing of the Danian, J.R.R. Tolkien discussed mostly the two dialects of this language, focusing especially on the dialect spoken by the Green-elves of Beleriand.[3]
