Morgul Vale was a valley in the Ephel Dúath through which the Morgulduin ran. The valley was guarded by Minas Morgul (Minas Ithil in years past). In the vale a stone bridge passed over water meadows filled with sickly white flowers, giving off a noxious vapor.[1]
History[]
It was through the vale that an army of Orcs marched from the fortress, led by the Witch-king of Angmar, towards Gondor to besiege Minas Tirith in the year TA 3019. Frodo Baggins, Samwise Gamgee, and Gollum observed the procession from hiding, on their way to the Stairs of Cirith Ungol.[1]
Several days later the Captains of the West approached the Vale, breaking the bridge to hinder any passage eastwards and setting fire to the fields.
After the War of the Ring, the valley was cleansed of evil over many centuries, and remained uninhabited by order of King Elessar.[2]
Etymology[]
Morgul is Sindarin for "dark sorcery". As with the Morgulduin, the Morgul Vale's name refers to the sorcery of Minas Morgul.
Whether or not the location was called Ithil Vale before the corruption of Minas Ithil in TA 2002 is unknown.
