Letter 344 is the three hundred and forty-fourth letter written by J.R.R. Tolkien and published in The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien.

Summary[]

Tolkien answered to Edmund Meskys, president of the Tolkien Society of America, who had addresses about Elvish numerals. Tolkien quickly expounded on the similitudes of the Elves and the Babylonians, and afterward specified that he had concocted an arrangement of both decimal and duodecimal numbers in Fëanorian script, yet that he couldn't discover it. He just recollected that they were composed with a positional framework like Arabic, and began with the most minimal number on the left.
