A letter written to a Fr. Douglas Carter by J.R.R. Tolkien is recorded as Letter 338 in the publication The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien.

Summary[]

Tolkien confirmed that he had not written material concerning the fate of the Entwives, and indeed nothing beyond the start of the Fourth Age, save for the unfinished work eventually known as The New Shadow. He explained his reasons for abandoning the story, believing that the newfound peace would contain no tales worth relating. Tolkien additionally opined that the Ents and Entwives would not rejoin society, but find a separate paradise of sorts until the world's end. Lastly, Tolkien noted his linguistic preference of Latin to Greek, and expressed some regret that one of his students had chosen to study Turkish.
