Landroval was one of the Great Eagles of Middle-earth and the brother of Gwaihir the Windlord.

BiographyEdit

Landroval was a descendant of Thorondor. It was said that Landroval and his brother Gwaihir helped Thorondor rescue Beren and Luthien from Angband.[1]

During the Third Age, it is possible that Landroval fought in the Battle of the Five Armies with the other Great Eagles.[2]

Landroval assisted Gwaihir in his many associations with Gandalf and his companions. He was present at the Battle of the Black Gate, swooping to attack the Nazgûl on their fell beasts. Together with Gandalf, Gwaihir and Meneldor, he also rescued Frodo Baggins and Sam Gamgee from Mordor after the completion of the Quest of the Ring.[3]

EtymologyEdit

The name Landroval is Sindarin and means "Broad Wing". It came from the words land ("broad") and roval ("pinion, wing").
