Current policies
Major and enforced policies
1. This is a Book First Tolkien Mythology wiki, which means that all non-canon stuff is to be put in its proper place. (Images are excluded from this rule due to the lack of any canonical pictures of many things in Tolkien Mythology.)
Details of this rule:
- Objects, characters, creatures, weapons, plots, descriptions, and all other information found in movies, video games, card-playing games, online games, role-playing games, or board games must placed in an article's Portrayal in adaptations section and justified properly.
- All non-canon articles must have the following notices and be placed in the following categories.
- {{NonCanon}}
- Categorized under anyone of the following categories located here [[Category:Non-canonical topics]].
2. Fandom, that is, characters from LOTR discussion forums, war gaming sites, someones' mind out of the blue, Video game MODs (Characters and any other things) are not allowed here except in one's Userspace (example: in User:DarkLantern) Fandom or fan fictions are forbidden in all mainstream sections except in personal Namespaces and Userspaces. If you want to create Fan Fiction please write it at our associate wiki LOTR Fanon wiki.
3. Editing other peoples' Userpages (example: User:Wyvern Rex.) is forbidden. The only possible exception to this is that it is permissible for a User, registered or anonymous, to undo an obvious vandalism on a Userpage if no Admin or rollback User is present to fix the problem.
4. Putting your signature on any page save for a Talkpage or Usertalk page or writing on a main article (not its Talkpage) that you edited it or created it in praise of yourself, is forbidden. Any such signature will be removed instantly. Additionally, LOTR main-page articles must not be used for personal opinions.
5. If you are going to use an Infobox on your Userpage, Do Not use the ones listed on Template:Infobox Person or Template:Infobox Character, because these will put your Userpage in Category:Characters, which is for Tolkien's In-universe characters only, NOT Userpages. This rule's purpose is to avoid having people's Userpages listed as though they were characters in Tolkien's Mythology, because that makes the Wiki look like an unorganized mess. Use Userbox instead.
6. Pages created to advertise Tolkien-themed games, forums, blogs, fandom communities, websites, and others are absolutely forbidden and will be deleted instantly without notice because they are considered to be Spam. If want to talk about about a new Tolkien product of some kind, please contact the local Admin about starting a blog on this subject. He will ensure that it is an on-topic civilized discussion free of junk mail-type advertisements, spam, and personal attacks.
7. This is also usually a most popular or recognized names first or in many cases the person, place, or object's name in English first Tolkien Mythology wiki. For example, Blue Mountains over Ered Luin, Laketown over Esgaroth, Rhovanion over Wilderland, Gollum over Sméagol, and Moria over Khazad-dûm or Mines of Moria. (See also: Forum:Naming standards)
8. All articles must have references to where the creator got the information from or it will be Marked for Deletion.
Minor polices, important guidelines, and good suggestions
1. Please embolden the title of the article only once at the start of the article and always categorize anything new you create. Note: putting "internal link" brackets around the title of the page (like this: [[The Hobbit]]) will also embolden the title.
2. Articles for deletion: These suspect or disagreed with articles must first have a notice {{Afd}} or {{Speedy}} on it and/or placed here for discussion or voting or the articles talkpage for discussion.
- Registered users votes and opinions are the only ones considered to be truly valid since becoming a registered user means you are closer to being a member of the community then an anon, however, this being a free wiki that anyone edit they can still offer an opinion on the subject for the sake of argument.
3. All articles that are proposed for Merging with another should have {{Merge}} placed within the article and their merging discussed and voted upon in Forum:Articles to be merged.
- It is also ok for the matter to be talked about at their personal article discussion pages but the final decisions are made at Forum:Articles to be merged.
- Registered users votes and opinions are the only ones considered to be truly valid since becoming a registered user means you are closer to being a member of the community then an anon, however, this being a free wiki that anyone edit they can still offer an opinion on the subject for the sake of argument.
4. When welcoming a new registered User, you should use this one {{Welc1}}--~~~~ as it has a link to this page.
5. All registered Users and Anons are encouraged to write their own articles, edits and contributions meaning stating them in YOUR OWN WORDS, that means kindly NOT copying word for word from other Tolkien websites and independent from Wikia Tolkien Mythology free editing sites most notably Tolkien Gateway, and others such as: The Annals of Arda, The Encyclopedia of Arda, and many others see Category:Websites. However, contributors are allowed to copy directly from the Wikipedia as a start for an article but are encouraged to rewrite the article in THEIR OWN WORDS. Think about it, what is the point in being an editor and contributor if your just going to copy other peoples' work. Be honest, original, and think for yourself!
6. All registered Users who have created a userpage with an intent to stay are encouraged to tell us about themselves and to give an account of their knowledge of Tolkien Mythology using the knowledge templates see in: Category:Userbox templates and the languages they speak and are familiar with see in: Category:Babel templates.
7. There is the issue of over-categorization here. For example, Boromir is a Man of Gondor and since this category (Category:Men of Gondor) already exists under Category:Men, there is no reason to have Category:Men on his page anymore.
8. From now on, it is Biography not History for characters and non-canonical characters and History for locations and objects see: Aragorn II Elessar and Hithlum.
9. All articles should be properly sorted. Characters should be sorted by their last name or surname. Please use this to do so {{DEFAULTSORT:}}.
Notes
These polices are the rules here but they were not made in just one swift unilateral stroke by one of its administrators. They were made fact slowly and steadily over time by discussions and actions made by interested Users concerned with the community here, or simply what has generally always been done and accepted. Lacking any grounded explanation of the policies here and desperately needing one for the purpose of order, this page was created and simply the spelled out and laid out what has been the rules here and a few other guidelines and polices added by administrator DarkLantern that needed to be written down and made clear, to avoid confusion and chaos.
