J.R.R. Tolkien: Origins of Middle-earth is a 30-minute documentary short, directed by Michael Pellerin, that is the first feature of the first disc-appendix of the Special Extended Edition of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.

In this documentary, Peter Jackson, Jude Fisher, Philippa Boyens, a few Tolkien authors (most predominantly Brian Sibley and Tom Shippey), and others tell the narrative of J.R.R. Tolkien's friendship with C.S. Lewis, their experience with World War I, Tolkien's inspirations from the war, the creative process and composition of The Lord of the Rings, its impact and reception when published, the conflicting worldviews represented in The Two Towers, and the relationship between Frodo and Sam.
