The Houses of the Dead were a crypt on the top tier of Minas Tirith. It was here that the Stewards of Gondor were buried.

When Denethor's madness set in in The Return of the King, he took Faramir to the Houses, intending to burn both Faramir and himself alive on a pyre, thinking him to be dead.

Portrayal in AdaptationsEdit

In the film The Return of the King, the entrance way to the Houses of the Dead was a large wooden door built into a cliff-side. A long hallway beyond had an intersection where three passageways branched off at 360 degrees, 90 degrees, and 180 degrees. Along the walls, alcoves were set, each with a stone tomb, the top of each tomb carved into the likeness of the steward contained within. In the center of the intersection a plain stone slab lay upon which the priests prepared the dead.
