Hirilondë was a ship built and used by Aldarion. People who wondered at its great size called it Turuphanto, the "Wooden Whale".[1]
History[]
Aldarion used Hirilondë to set sail from Rómenna. It sailed, but travelled without the blessing of the King of Númenor Tar-Meneldur. Though it was customary for the female relative of the captain to set the Green Bough of Return, Erendis, Aldarion's wife, did not send anything. In her stead, the wife of Aldarion's captain performed the custom.[1]
After Aldarion became king in SA 883, he wished to revisit Middle-earth and he sailed on Hirilondë for Mithlond. Again, no bough was set on the ship's prow, but there was an image of an eagle with golden beak and jeweled eyes: a gift from Círdan.[2]
Etymology[]
The name Hirilondë is Quenya, and means "Haven-finder", from londë ("haven").[1][3]
