A Hill-troll in the film Born of Hope
Hill-trolls were a species of troll closely related to mountain-trolls and cave-trolls.
History
Hill-trolls were known to have inhabited the Coldfells north of Rivendell, as it was here that at least two of their number killed Arador, the fourteenth chieftain of the Dúnedain and grandfather of Aragorn II Elessar.[1]
A company of hill-trolls from Gorgoroth later took part in the Battle of the Black Gate; charging the line of Gondorian soldiers and throwing down many, including Beregond. Peregrin Took was able to kill one of trolls, but the creature fell on him and rendered him unconscious.[2]
Description
Hill-trolls were said to be taller and broader than men, as all trolls were, and their hide was perhaps akin to a close-fitting mesh, covered with horny scales. Hill-trolls were also known to bite the throats of those that they threw down.[2]
At least some of these trolls, notably those that fought for Sauron at the Black Gate, bore round, black bucklers of huge size and wielded heavy hammers.[2]
Portrayal in adaptations
Hill-trolls appeared in The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth II: The Rise of the Witch-king, as part of the Angmar faction.
They also appear in the fan-production Born of Hope, in which is depicted the death of Arador.
