- "I believe you are friends and folk worthy of honour, who have no evil purpose. You may go in."
- —Háma to Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
Háma was a Man of Rohan and the doorward of the Meduseldand captain of Théoden's guard.
Biography
Háma greeted Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli when they arrived to speak with Théoden. He told the company to leave their weapons behind, by order of Grima Wormtongue, before entering the King's hall. He disarmed Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli, but against the King's orders permitted Gandalf to keep his staff with him as a courtesy, though he knew, as he remarked, that "The staff in the hand of a wizard may be more than a prop for age."
In the book though Háma was present at the Battle of the Hornburg, and died defending the gates of Helm's Deep. He was buried at Helm's Deep after the battle.[1]
Portrayal in adaptations
Peter Jackson's The Two Towers
In the film, Háma was still the doorward of Théoden. He allows Gandalf to pass with his staff as well. He is killed when a Warg-rider scout attacks and then he was devoured by the Warg while the rider fought Gamling on their way to Helm's Deep, before it is killed by Legolas. One Orc rider managed to overthrow Háma knocking him off his horse. His body is left behind. His only known family is his son, Haleth, who is made to fight at Helm's Deep. New Zealand actor John Leigh plays Háma. In The Two Towers at the Battle of Helm's Deep Peter Jackson instead added his son Haleth.
On radio
Michael Spice provided the voice for Háma in The Lord of the Rings (1981 radio series).
Videogames
Háma makes an appearance in The Lord of the Rings Online and LEGO The Lord of the Rings: The Video Game. He is also a playable character, and can be purchased at the gate of Edoras.
