Greed was a theme in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hoard, a poem from The Adventures of Tom Bombadil.

In the first part of the stanza, an Elven hoard of treasure is all that is left of Elves after their doom.

In the succeeding stanzas the hoard is found by a dwarf who makes beautiful jewelry and coins until he hoards his treasure work even when he becomes old; he is killed by a dragon who hoards the gold until he becomes old as well; he is killed by a young warrior who becomes an old and greedy king who thinks of nothing but his hoarded treasure, until he is overthrown and killed.
