Goblin-town

From the One Wiki to Rule Them All, the Lord of the Rings Encyclopedia.

Goblin Town is a goblin (or Orc) dwelling which lies under the High Pass in the Misty Mountains, and is ruled by the Great Goblin.

[edit] Description

Goblin Town is a series of tunnels and caverns running an estimated five miles long all leading to the Great Cavern, which lead all the way through the mountains, with a "back door" near the Eagles' eyrie in Wilderland. The cave of Gollum is close to this door.

[edit] History

During the journey to Erebor, Bilbo Baggins is captured by the goblins of Goblin Town together with the Dwarves of Thorin Oakenshield. They are brought before the Great Goblin, who accuses them of spying, and is enraged when he finds out Thorin is carrying Orcrist, a sword the Great Goblin remembers from Gondolin. With the help of Gandalf the wizard Bilbo and the Dwarves escape and kill the Great Goblin, after which a frantic pursuit occurs. It is near here in the long series of connecting tunnels that Bilbo found the One Ring and met Gollum. It is not known whether if Goblin-town continued to be an orc stronghold into the Fourth Age.
