Gimli about to use his axe in The Lord of the Rings motion picture trilogy.

A battle axe was the dwarf Gimli's weapon of choice, and used by him during the Quest of the Ring. It is unknown either at what point during his life he acquired the axe, or if he continued to use the axe after the War of the Ring.[1]

Portrayal in adaptationsEdit

The Lord of the Rings film trilogyEdit

In Peter Jackson's film adaption of The Lord of the Rings, Gimli has many axes, but his primary choice in battle is shown to be this double-bladed battle axe. It is not seen with him before the Fellowship entered the Mines of Moria, so it is commonly assumed that he acquired it in the Chamber of Mazarbul. He uses it in nearly every fight thereafter, including the Fight in Balin's Tomb, the Skirmish at Amon Hen, and the Battle of Helms Deep. He is never seen using it in The Return of the King, as it remains pinned to the back of his cloak.

In the films, the axe has a long, wooden shaft attached to two thick, opposing blades
