Fréaláf Hildeson was the tenth King of Rohan, and the first king of the second line.
Biography
Fréaláf was born in TA 2726 and was the son of the noblewoman Hild, the sister of Helm Hammerhand. and an unnamed father. He was also the nephew of Helm Hammerhand. When Rohan was invaded by the Dunlendings, he and many other survivors fled to the refuges in Dunharrow. It was from the refuge at Dunharrow that Fréaláf planned an attack to regain Edoras.
After the Long Winter was over, Fréaláf and the surviving Rohirrim made their move. They came down from the safety of Dunharrow with a small force of men and regained the Meduseld and the city of Edoras. Then, with the aid of a force from Gondor the Rohirrim eventually drove the Dunlendings back across the rivers Isen and Adorn, and purged the mouths of the Isen and Lefnui of the Corsairs of Umbar.
Because King Helm and his sons were all lost in the war, Fréaláf, a noble became king of a second line. At his coronation, the Wizard Saruman suddenly appeared after years of absence wooing the king with gifts and offering him his support and friendship. On Fréaláf's advice, Beren the Steward of Gondor bestowed Saruman the Keys of Orthanc, giving him Isengard to dwell in on the condition that he must protect it from another conquest by the Dunlendings. During his time, he had the body of Helm recovered from the Hornburg and buried in the ninth Mound of the Kings of Rohan, and presided over the restoration of Rohan.
Fréaláf ruled for thirty-nine years, he died in TA 2798 at the age of seventy-two and was succeeded by his son Brytta Léofa.[1]
