Forums: Index > Council > How did Smaug know Thorin's title?

Hi I am not an expert on the book or the movies but I had an itchy question after I have watched the 2nd movie and I am sorry if I am being a complete idiot by asking a question like this as I say I am kind of newbee. Anyway the question is

While Smaug was talking with Bilbo, he asked a question to Bilbo like 'where is your dwarf friend Oakenshiled' but as far as I know Smaug should have not known this title of the Thorin because this title is given the Thorin after he defeated the Azog with a sheild made by oak and this event took place after Smaug has conquered the mountain and again as far as I know Smaug was assumed to sleep or stay in that mountain until the Bilbo woke him up without a contact with outside world. So Smaug should not be aware of Thorin's title but he called him with his title. How? or am I completely wrong :D

s i dont actually know, i dont think smaug knew in the book. In fact i dont even know if smaug knew that much about thorin in the book. there was no direct communication between the 2 of them as a recall. ps....you are so lucky to see the movie. I am an enormous LOTR fan and i have to wait 2 more weeks for TDOS to come out as i live in Australia ;( Darthleapyous (talk) 12:09, December 13, 2013 (UTC)
  • In the film, Smaug is very intelligent and apparently has a source or sources of information from the Dark Forces that we don't know about. For instance, he apparently also knows (and speaks to Bilbo) about the power and threat of Sauron currently growing elsewhere. Perhaps, as he flies about in search of food, he questions the occasional orc or two that he comes across before letting them go (or eating them). Who knows? - Gradivus, 18:40, December 13, 2013 (UTC)

Possibly he had never left the mountain to find food. He is so huge that everyone in Middle-Earth could see him. If he really did come out, why would people said he has extinct for 60 years??? I think some sort of news came to Erebor and he heard about that is a more suitable reason. ---Prince of Erebor, King Under the Mountain(Reply Press Here)
