The Midgewater Marshes

The Midgewater Marshes was a fly-infested fenland in central Eriador. The Great Road was located to the south of the marshes, with the Chetwood on the western side while the Weather Hills were in the east.

History[]

The Midgewater Marshes were where Aragorn and the Hobbits Frodo Baggins, Meriadoc Brandybuck, Peregrin Took, and Sam Gamgee had to cross on their journey to Rivendell.[1]

The terrain of the marshes was boggy and unyielding, with no permanent trails. It was dotted with many pools, rushes and reeds, and was named after the midges (tiny biting flies similar to gnats) which dwelt in the region. It was also populated by annoying cricket-like insects that Sam Gamgee referred to as "Neekerbreekers",[2] and small but hidden birds.

In adaptations[]

Peter Jackson's The Fellowship of the Ring[]

The Midgewater Marshes were not shown in the theatrical version of Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings movies, but the location does appear in the special extended edition of The Fellowship of the Ring.
