Fastred was a Man of Rohan.

Biography[]

Fastred rode to Gondor with Théoden's army in the year TA 3019, and was thereafter slain in the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. His name is lamented in remembrance in the Song of the Mounds of Mundburg.[1]

In adaptations[]

In The Lord of the Rings Online, Fastred is a major character in the Rohan storyline. At twenty-four years old in TA 3019, he is the Thane of the city of Snowbourn, and the Reeve of the Sutcrofts. He is the son of Dagred, who was killed by Orcs only nine months ago and Théodhild, sister-daughter of King Théoden. He is married to Elflád, daughter of Elfhelm, and the two have a son named Folcred who is but one year old. A great warrior, Fastred is also stubborn and rash, always seeking revenge upon the Orcs for the death of his father. When Éomer orders all people to abandon Eastemnet and move across the Entwash river, Fastred openly defies his order, keeping his family in the city and leading his riders against the raiding parties of the Mordor Orcs instead.

His rashness is exploited by Crúmgam, a man of Mordor, who openly taunts Fastred by the side of his father's grave, leading to a reckless charge which leads several riders dead. Crúmgam then presents Fastred a token of cloth from his son's blanket, causing the Reeve to despair when Crúmgam launches a direct attack on Snowbourn. However, other Reeves of Sutcrofts come with aid and drive Crúmgam back, after which it is revealed that the child is safe, taken to Edoras by Théodhild against her son's wishes. When the Lords of the Eastemnet hold a council on what to do about Gríma Wormtongue's growing influence on the King, Fastred supports Aldor Harding and fights in the defence of the city of Hytbold.

Fastred is next met by player in the Drúadan Forest during the ride of the Rohirrim to Minas Tirith. In the Battle of the Pelennor Fields Fastred fights bravely until Crúmgam reappears, causing Fastred's thirst for vengeance to override his common sense. He attacks Crúmgam's position with a small host of men and is killed.
