Events
- Birth of Lalaith, second child of Húrin and Morwen.
- Beren and Lúthien enter Angband and steal a Silmaril from Morgoth's crown but are waylaid by the great wolf Carcharoth who bites off Beren's hand along with the Silmaril but Thorondor and the Eagles rescue them and return them to Doriath. Carcharoth is driven mad by the Silmaril and runs to Doriath.

- Beren dies of his mortal wounds caused by Carcharoth but still he achieved the Quest . King Thingol takes some companions (including Beleg and Huan) and goes on a hunt for Carcharoth (The Hunting of the Wolf).
- Huan the Hound fights Carcharoth to the death and both die.
