The Ered Gorgoroth (meaning Mountains of Terror) was a mountain range in the north of Beleriand.

The Ered Gorgoroth was the southern edge of the highlands of Dorthonion, and separated Dorthonion and the northlands of Ard-galen from Beleriand proper.

The range was named by the Sindar of Doriath after the spider-creature Ungoliant made it her temporary home.

South of the Ered Gorgoroth lay the land of Nan Durgotheb (the Valley of Dreadful Death) infested by giant spiders that Ungoliant evilly used to breed a race of terrible arachnid offspring. Among them was her infamous daughter Shelob.

The Ered Gorgoroth had no known passes, and even the Orcs of Morgoth passed it by. In all of the First Age, only Beren son of Barahir is said to have passed the mountain range, and he never spoke of this terrible journey.

Like the rest of Beleriand, the Ered Gorgoroth were drowned during the War of Wrath, although the highland of Dorthonion survived as the isle of Tol Fuin.[1]
