Eärámë, or ‘Eaglepinion’, was the name of the first ship ever owned by Eärendil.

History and CanonEdit

In pre-Silmarillion versions of Tolkien’s story of the voyage of Eärendil, Eärendil was sailing in Eaglepinion when searching for Tuor - who had in secret chased after “the conches of Ulmo” in the ship Swanwing - and wrecked. The Vala Ulmo appeared and saved Eärendil, there at sea, before bidding him sail to Kôr. According to an outline of one of Tolkien’s versions of this tale, it is then later that Eärendil sails on the ship Vingilot, with Voronwë. [1]

Eärámë and its short-lived role are left out of the Silmarillion chapter “Of the Voyage of Eärendil and the War of Wrath

EtymologyEdit

TranslationEdit

Eärámë is Quenya for ‘Eagle’s wing’, from ea meaning “eagle”, as in Eärendil, and rámë which is said to derive from ráma, “wing”, as in Alqarámë. [2]

Previous namesEdit

Other names given to this ship were Earum, which was changed from Earam, and Earnhama in Old English, meaning “eagle-coat”, though this name was struck out.[3]
