Denethor I

Denethor I (r. TA 2435 - TA 2477) was the tenth Ruling Steward of Gondor.

Born in TA 2375, Denethor I was the son of Rian, the sister of the ninth Ruling Steward Dior.

Following the death of his uncle, Dior, in TA 2435 Denethor I became the tenth Ruling Steward of Gondor. Denethor I was final steward to rule during the era known as the Watchful Peace. After ruling Gondor peacefully twenty five years, the Watchful Peace ended in TA 2460 with the return of Sauron. In TA 2475 Sauron's forces attacked Gondor unleashing the dreaded Uruk-hai, a new race of black orcs both heavy and strong and for whom later were most feared for many years to come. They destroyed Osgiliath and broke its great stone-bridge leaving it ruined and abandoned from then on. However, the Men of Gondor under the leadership of Denethor I's son Boromir recaptured Ithilien from Sauron's forces, and drove them back east of the river. Denethor I died two years later in the year TA 2477 at the age of 102 years old after a rule of forty-two years. He was succeeded by his son Boromir.
