Dírhael was the grandfather of Aragorn II Elessar and father of Gilraen.

BiographyEdit

Dírhael was a stern man who found it hard to show his emotions. When Dírhael and Ivorwen lived in the north before Gilraen was born, he and Arador had been close friends and he watched over Arathorn's early years. As a protective father he was resistant to the relationship that started to grow between his daughter and Arathorn. His foresight also told him there was trouble ahead.

He was a descendant of Aranarth, the first Chieftain of the Dúnedain and the husband of Ivorwen. Their daughter Gilraen married Arathorn II, Aragorn's father.[1][2]

Behind the ScenesEdit

In "The Making of Appendix A" in The Peoples of Middle-earth, Christopher Tolkien describes how his name had once been Dirhoel instead of Dírhael.[3]

Fan WorkEdit

Dírhael appeared in the fan-made film, Born of Hope and was played by an actor named Andrew McDonald.
