The One Wiki to Rule Them All

The Caragdûr was a steep black precipice of rock located on the north side of the Amon Gwareth near the North Gate of the city of Gondolin.

It was here that Eöl the Dark Elf was executed for the accidental killing of his wife, Aredhel, in his attempt to kill his son Maeglin for disobeying him.

Etymology

The name Caragdûr is Sindarin for "dark spike". It comes from the words carag, meaning "spike" or "tooth of rock", and dûr, meaning "dark".
