The Caragdûr was a steep, black precipice of rock located on the north side of the Amon Gwared near the North Gate of Gondolin.[1]

Eöl the Dark Elf was executed here for the accidental killing of his wife, Aredhel, in his attempt to kill his son Maeglin for disobeying him.[2]

Etymology[]

The name Caragdûr is Sindarin for "dark spike". It comes from the words carag ("spike" or "tooth of rock") and dûr ("dark"). [citation needed]
