Brandir

From the One Wiki to Rule Them All, the Lord of the Rings Encyclopedia.

Brandir was a Lord of the Haladin in the First Age who dwelt in the Forest of Brethil which was north of Doriath in the settlement of Ephel Brandir in Middle-earth.

[edit] Biography

Brandir was born in FA 467 to Handir and Beldis who was a woman of the House of Bëor. Brandir was lame, apparently from birth because he was born with a club foot. His disability resulted the appellations 'The Lame and Clubfoot' being attached to his name. The latter was an insult used by Turin during his confrontation with Brandir following Niënor's death.

Brandir's disability did not prevent him from leading his people successfully in guerilla warfare against the Orcs.

When Túrin Turambar arrived in the Forest of Brethil, Brandir was opposed to him and suspected that Túrin Turambar would bring misfortune onto the community. Later on Brandir also accepted the woman Nienor, whom soon he secretly fell in love with.

During Túrin's foray to kill the dragon Glaurung, Brandir observed the drama from afar and overheard Glaurung telling Nienor who she really was. Brandir reported this news later to Túrin, who disbelieved Brandir and killed him in anger.
