Benedict Cumberbatch is an English film, television, stage, and voice actor who provides the voice and motion capture for the dragon Smaug and the Necromancer (Sauron) in The Hobbit film trilogy.

Career[]

His most acclaimed roles include Stephen Hawking in the BBC drama Hawking (2004), Victor Frankenstein and his creature in Danny Boyle's stage adaptation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (2011) at the Royal National Theatre, Sherlock Holmes in the BBC/PBS series Sherlock, where he works with Martin FreemanPeter Guillam in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011), Christopher Tietjens in the BBC/HBO miniseries Parade's End (2013), Khan Noonien Singh in Star Trek Into Darkness (2013), and Julian Assange in The Fifth Estate (2013). Cumberbatch stars in the historical drama film, The Imitation Game (2014) as wartime cryptographer Alan Turing.[1] That year, he was up for a Best Actor for his work as Turing but lost to Eddie Redmayne in The Theory of Everything. In 2016, Cumberbatch took the role of Doctor Stephen Strange in the Marvel movies Doctor Strange (2016) and Avengers: Infinity War (2018). In 2018, He played Patrick Melrose in Showtime's five-part drama mini-series Patrick Melrose, which was based on the semi-autobiographical novels about Britain's upper class by Edward St Aubyn. In 2013 he played the role of Jamie Stewart in War Horse with co-star Tom Hiddlestone. In 2019 he played the role of Captain Mackenzie in the war film 1917.

He has earned an Olivier Award, four BAFTA nominations, two Emmy Award nominations and a Golden Globe nomination among others. In September 2013, he was honoured by BAFTA Los Angeles with a Britannia Award for British Artist of the Year for his "masterful performances in television, film and theatre."[2][3] He ranked No. 1 in Empire magazine's worldwide poll of 100 Sexiest Movie Stars of 2013.

In 2015, he married Sophie Hunter and became the father of two boys.[4]
