Beregond died in TA 2811, and Belecthor succeeded him as the twenty-first Ruling Steward. Belecthor continued his father's campaigns against the Corsairs of Umbar and the orcs. The White Council met in TA 2850; at the meeting, Gandalf urged an attack on Dol Guldur to drive Sauron out, but Saruman overruled him. Belecthor died in TA 2872 at the age of 120 years old after a rule of sixty-one years. When Belecthor II died, the White Tree of Gondor withered and died, but no sapling or seedling was found. So the withered tree was left standing until the return of the king.
Belecthor was succeeded by his son Thorondir.
