The One Wiki to Rule Them All

The Battle of Greenfields was a battle that took place in the northern part of the Shire in the latter-half of the Third Age, and was the only time the Shire was ever attacked by Orcs.

History

In TA 2747, a band of Orcs from Mount Gram led by their king Golfimbul invaded the Shire. The Hobbits were prepared and met them with a force led by Bandobras Took in the Northfarthing. According to the traditional story, Bullroarer charged the ranks of the Orcs on horseback and with a wooden club knocked Golfimbul's head clean off, sending it sailing a hundred yards through the air and down a rabbit-hole, thus winning the battle and simultaneously inventing the game of golf.[1]

No other battle occurred within the borders of the Shire until the Battle of Bywater[2][3] on November 1, 3019, over two-hundred years later.[4]
