Bamfurlong was the name given to the farmland of Farmer Maggot, and was located in the Marish, a part of the Shire's Eastfarthing.
Description[]
Bamfurlong was boggy in nature and made for above ground habitation rather than the traditional Hobbit-hole. It also made excellent ground for growing mushrooms. Bamfurlong included a huge turnip field and a lane that led to a large, thatched house and outbuildings. The house and buildings were built of brick and were protected by a high wall with a wooden gate.[1][2]
History[]
In the year TA 3018, Frodo Baggins, Samwise Gamgee, and Peregrin Took came to the farm, and were invited to stay for a short time by Farmer Maggot. That night, the farmer secretly took them to Bucklebury Ferry, where they met Meriadoc Brandybuck.[1]
Etymology[]
J.R.R. Tolkien himself suggested the name Bamfurlong comes from Old English, meaning something akin to 'bean-field'.[citation needed]
