Balcmeg was an Orc of Angband slain by Tuor in Gondolin during the First Age.[1]

Biography[]

Balcmeg was considered to be "a great fighter among the Orclim" of Angband.[2]

In the Fall of Gondolin in FA 510, Balcmeg was among the Orcs that assailed the Gondothlim alongside the Balrogs at the coming of the Drakes. Balcmeg was ultimately slain by Tuor, who hewed him "asunder" with his axe, Dramborleg, in the process. The slaying of Balcmeg was part of the famous onslaught which is said to have been the greatest killing of Orcs ever conducted by the Eldar.[3]

Etymology[]

Balcmeg is a Gnomish name meaning "heart of evil",[4] being comprised of the element Balc ("evil, cruel").[2] The Qenya cognate was Malkamekte.[5]

Other versions[]

J.R.R. Tolkien wrote the story of the fall of the city in 1917 and never fully revised it, and Balcmeg does not appear in the published version of The Silmarillion, although he was obviously of some importance, for only three Orcs out of many that Tuor slew in Gondolin were named.
