Annatar

From the One Wiki to Rule Them All, the Lord of the Rings Encyclopedia.

Sauron as Annatar

Annatar was the name that Sauron took during his dealings with the Elves of Hollin (Eregion). The name Annatar means "Giver of Gifts". Sauron taught the Elven smith Celebrimbor, and befriended him, and they together made the Nine and the Seven Rings of Power. Celebrimbor made the Three Rings of Power using his own skill, and Sauron could not control those. Eventually Sauron revealed his intentions while forging the One Ring:

"Three Rings for the Elven Kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf Lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for mortal men doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the land of Mordor where the shadows lie.

One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.
In the land of Mordor where the shadows lie."

In the war that followed Celebrimbor was killed, and Sauron seized all but the three rings.
